While not quite as wet as September, Akumal still receives a large amount of rain throughout the month of October. In addition, hurricanes and tropical storms remain a threat as storms are still likely to develop near the Yucatan Channel before moving northward. However, it is not unheard of for storms to turn westward thanks to a ridge of high pressure and push a storm into the eastern coast of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula.
One reason for the continued hurricane threat is that water temperatures remain very warm. In fact, average surface water temperatures are still 29°C (84°F) throughout the month. Waters that are this warm are not only perfect for visitors to enjoy, but also perfect for the formation of tropical systems.
With or without hurricanes, the rain amounts for the region remain very high. In fact, this is the second wettest month of the year with an average rainfall amount of a very impressive 202mm. This rain will fall over an average of 14 days of the month. As a result, visitors should consult an extended forecast before leaving home to make sure they have the proper amount of raingear with them. With this amount of rainfall expected, this time of the year is still squarely in the wet season. As a result, there may be a few deals to be had and smaller crowds visiting the area.
Land based temperatures remain warm and muggy with average afternoon highs of 30°C (86°F). Overnight lows are also very consistent and remain at an average temperature of 24°C (75°F). Overall, the average daily temperature is 27°C (81°F). If visitors are able to avoid the numerous late afternoon showers and thunderstorms, they will be able to take advantage of the warm temperatures and an average of 6 hours of sunshine per day.
