Avg Historical Daily Average

Not only is June squarely in the middle of the rainy season for the region, it also marks the beginning of hurricane season. While most hurricanes form later in the season, it is not out of the question to see storms form during this time of the year. Thanks to Akumal's location on the Yucatan Peninsula, it can be vulnerable to storms developing near, or traveling through, the Yucatan Channel that flows in between Mexico and the island of Cuba.

While it is not anywhere close to being the wettest month of the year, the region still experiences an impressive average of 187mm of precipitation. Additionally, the rain comes over an average of 12 days of the month. This is a significant increase from the month before and visitors will need to bring raingear with them in order to make sure they stay dry. Because of the nature of the tropics, some of this rain will come in the form of intense afternoon and early evening thunderstorms before dissipating and leaving a beautiful sunset in their wake.

Even with the rain, afternoon temperatures are very warm and will reach an average high of 31°C (88°F). Combined with the humidity of the region, the heat index will cause the temperatures to feel much warmer than they actually are. Even the evenings during this time of the year are steamy with overnight lows only falling to 24°C (75°F).

Water temperatures remain warm and if the weather allows, make for a great time to visit the area beaches. The average water surface water temperature for this time of the year is a pleasant 28°C (82°F). When water temperatures are above 27°C (80°F) for a depth of at least 150 feet, it can help spawn the creation of hurricanes. As a result, hurricane season can ramp up quickly in this part of the world.

Where To Stay

June is not only the beginning of hurricane season, but also a fairly wet month in the region. However, don't let that stop you from visiting and staying at the Grand Oasis Tulum. This all nclusive resort is off the beaten path, but is no less luxurious than many of the other resorts. Guests may enjoy the ten on-site restaurants, 14 bars, two swim-up bars, free golf, a disco, unlimited access to the tennis courts and so much more. There is also a plunge pool and direct access to a beautiful beach.

For those travelling with a large group of people or a large family, Luna Azul features one and two bedroom condos available for rent. Located on Half Moon Bay, each rental comes with maid service, air conditioned bedrooms, Wi-Fi, private beach access, satellite TV and more. The condos are perfectly situated near shops, restaurants and some of the best beaches in the world.

Those looking for some peace and privacy will enjoy the small Hotel Que Onda. With only ten rooms there are still plenty of amenities such as a large pool, well-maintained garden and more. Guests can choose to rest and relax or take advantage of the nearby sites and activities. Perfect for a quick getaway, all rooms are tastefully appointed and just waiting for you to arrive.

Hit The Beach

As the region continues to get deeper into the rainy season, a total of 187mm of rain is expected in the month of June. However, much of this falls in the afternoon allowing visitors to enjoy the areas beaches earlier in the day. One of the best beaches to visit is Akumal Beach, itself. The word Akumal is Mayan for "place of turtles." As a result, visitors can watch the baby turtles hatch from June to November. In order to keep the baby turtles safe during their first trip to the sea, there are scores of volunteers who help guide them into the waiting waters.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Serving both authentic Mexican and American dishes, Beached Bikini Bar and Grill is a casual restaurant where you can enjoy a great meal with your toes in the sand. This family restaurant also offers direct access to Akumal Bay and allows guests to take in a spectacular view. The menu includes a mix of fajitas, tacos, hamburgers, fries, and more.

Some of the most consistent good food is served at Lucy's Kitchen for both breakfast and lunch. Of course, guests can also not forget an order of some of the best homemade ice cream in Akumal. Now located as a part of the Turtle Bay Café, Lucy's continues to serve outstanding fish tacos and other local fare. This is one spot not to be missed.

Located in Playa del Carmen, Kool Beach Club allows guests to party all day on a beautiful stretch of white, sugary sand. Guests can get amazing drinks throughout the day while taking in the sand and surf. With outstanding service, it's a great place to take in the sights and sounds of the region.

What To Do

For the ultimate in family adventure, a day spent at Xel Ha is well worth the price of admission. However, be sure to check the forecast before running into one of June's heavy, late afternoon thunderstorms that lead to this being one of the wettest months of the year. If the weather does cooperate, visitors are able to explore a number of different water activities such as snorkelling, river rafting, cliff jumping or taking a dip in a cenote. Of course, you may also choose to just rest in one of the many hammocks while sipping on a beverage.

The Mayans first settled this part of Mexico centuries ago and much of their architecture still remains today. Just south of Akumal are some of the finest ruins of what was once a great civilization. Open every day from 8:00am until 5:00pm, visitors are able to step back in time and explore the cliff top ruins of Tulum. Of course, there are also numerous other sites in the region to see as well.
