December marks the official start of the winter season for the region, but it definitely doesn't feel like winter in Akumal. Thanks to tropical temperatures and warmth, now is a very popular time to visit. As a result, the crowds begin to grow and there are not as many good deals to find as there were just a few short weeks earlier. Additionally, this marks the change over from the wet season to the dry one and visitors are able to spend much more time outdoors enjoying everything that the region has to offer.
After several months where the rainfall totals were in excess of 100 or even 200mm, this month is considerably drier. In fact, the region only experiences an average of 92mm of precipitation throughout the month. The end of the month is also much drier than the beginning and makes the holiday season the perfect time to plan a trip. The rain is expected to fall over a period of only 8 days and with temperatures well above freezing, there is no chance of seeing a white Christmas here.
In fact, temperatures remain very consistent from the previous few months. Overall, the average daily temperature is a very pleasant 24°C (75°F). There is no need for a heavy jacket as average overnight lows will only fall to 21°C (70°F). Temperatures will then climb to an average of 27°C (81°F) by the later afternoon hours. When combined with an average of 6 hours of sunshine per day, these conditions are near perfect for a holiday of any length.
Surface water temperatures are also very warm and just slightly cooler than they were in November. However, they are still plenty warm enough for visitors to enjoy a myriad of water sports. Average sea surface temperatures for this time of the year are 27°C (81°F).

While winter is settling in elsewhere, it still feels like summer in Akumal and these warm temperatures both on land and in the sea help bring tourists and locals to the beach. For those who are looking for paradise, be sure to visit the white sand beach of X'cacel. With very few people, chances are you will have plenty of space to spread out. This is a great spot for snorkelling or just enjoying the breath-taking beauty of this virgin beach. However, you will want to take everything you will need for the day, as there are no stores or restaurants located nearby.
Restaurants and Nightlife
With the holidays upon us, many people are looking for an upscale evening out in order to celebrate the season. One of the best places to do just that is Oasis Restaurant. Located in the Bahia Principe Akumal hotel, this high-end restaurant is nothing short of spectacular. While formal dress is required and reservations are recommended this is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner out.
For another upscale restaurant, but of the Italian variety, be sure to try Portofino Restaurant. Located in the same resort, this high-end restaurant has given a fancy spin on your favourite Italian dishes. Reservations are required.
One of the hottest bars in the area is Abolengo in Playa del Carmen. With a wide array of music, well stocked bar, laid back atmosphere and friendly staff, this is a place where you can stay for a while. The music allows you to dance the night away or you can rest in a comfortable chair and watch the action all night long.
What To Do
For a completely unique experience, be sure to visit the world's largest 3D museum located in Playa del Carmen. While the admission price may seem steep at first, it is well worth it as the entire family can enjoy fun for a few hours and take unique pictures as a part of the 3D imagery. The 3D Museum of Wonders is a great way to spend an afternoon if you get too much sun earlier while enjoying the drier December weather.
For art fans, the Galeria de Arte, 5ta Avenida is an excellent place to spend some significant time. This is not only a great spot to enjoy some traditional Mexican art, but also enjoy a wonderful lunch or dinner. It's also a great place to purchase some art to take home as a reminder of a great holiday.
