Avg Historical Daily Average

Weather continues to get stormier during the month of August for Akumal and the surrounding region. The region is closer to the peak of hurricane season. While most hurricanes during this time of the year don't form near the Yucatan Peninsula, it is quite common for them to move through the Yucatan Channel and affect the weather in the region with heavy rain, high winds and large waves.

Even without a passing hurricane, the rainfall amounts are impressive on their own. Throughout the month, the region receives an average of 146mm of precipitation. This rain will come over a period of 13 days in the form of mainly afternoon showers and heavy thunderstorms. With all the moisture in the atmosphere, it can also make it feel very steamy for much of the day.

When it doesn't rain, temperatures can spike. However, the average daily temperature for the month is 28°C (82°F). The day will begin with an average overnight low of 24°C (75°F). By the afternoon hours, it can be warm and sweltering with temperatures climbing to an average of 32°C (90°F). These numbers make this the warmest month of the year for the region.

Water temperatures are also at some of their warmest of the year with averages of 29°C (84°F). These temperatures will tie the following months of September and October as the months with the warmest water conditions. With these warm conditions, now is the time to enjoy the beach and the 7 hours of sunshine per day. Of course this is only possible if you are able to hit the beach when it is not raining. As a result, it is important to consult an extended forecast when heading on holiday and when already on site. This will help visitors pack the correct clothing and rain gear and get the most out of their holiday.

Where To Stay

The Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort is known as one of the best hotels in the area and will certainly not disappoint. The hotel itself is located along a beautiful stretch of beach that allows guests instant access to the sand and surf. All rooms have been appointed with high-end décor and include large bathrooms and ocean views. Guests can also enjoy numerous bars, restaurants, a wellness centre, spa and more.

One of the more luxurious resorts in the region is the Grand Palladium Kantenah Resort and Spa. With approximately 400 rooms ranging from the standard size to suites, there is a room for everyone's needs and budget. Additionally, guests will be treated to the lap of luxury thanks to 800 metres of private beach, a whopping 25 bars and 12 different types of restaurants ranging from a la cart to buffet. Children and adults will be right at home with daily and nightly entertainment planned for the whole family.

Located just up the road from Akumal is the Rosewood Mayakoba. Known as one of the finest hotels in the region, guests will certainly not be disappointed by staying here during an August holiday or any time of the year. With unprecedented service and amenities, there is absolutely nothing that the staff can't or won't do to make your stay one of a kind. Guests can choose to play golf, hit the private beach, take advantage of daily and nightly entertainment or just relax at the various pools.

Hit The Beach

Even though almost half of August sees some measurable rainfall, do try and find some time to visit one of the best beaches in the region at Sian Ka'an. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains 23 archaeological sites, numerous habitats, more than one million acres and several spectacular virgin beaches. Access to the beaches isn't easy and most of the time visitors will have to go through the jungle, but the beauty of the area makes up for any troubles.

Restaurants and Nightlife

While it is not new to Akumal anymore, Pancho Villa's continues to impress both tourists and locals with high quality food at reasonable prices. The restaurant features fresh fish in its tacos and other traditional Mexican food. Guests will also get a nice, welcomed reception by the staff that are on hand to answer any questions and help you pick out just the right dish.

With a plethora of casual restaurants in the city, sometimes it is nice to dress up and go to a more upscale restaurant. Visitors can definitely do that at the Gourmet Arlequin Restaurant. Located at the luxurious Bahia Principe Akumal, this restaurant offers fine dining at its best. The menu consists of traditional dishes served with a modern flare. Reservations are recommended and formal dress code is required.

If you are looking to dance the night away, look no further than the Palazzo Disco in Playa del Carmen. Guests can hit the dance floor to all the latest music and dance the night away while having a great time. As one of the bigger and nicer dance clubs in the area, this one should not be missed.

What To Do

Those who are looking to do more at the beach than snorkel or scuba dive may want to try their hand at kitesurfing. Companies such as Kite Surf Mexico will have you up and riding the waves in no time at all. While August can be wet with an average of 146mm of precipitation, there will be enough time to enjoy the waves and the winds. Companies such as this offer courses, rentals and even trips to help you try out your new skills.

However, if the weather is not cooperating, one of the best things to do is spend the day relaxing at a Budha Garden Spa. Allow yourself to be pampered by experts by taking part in massages, facials, wraps, body scrubs and more. This is the perfect way to spend a day with friends or with a significant other.
