Aarhus, the second largest city of Denmark is situated on the eastern coast of Jutland in Denmark. Aarhus also enjoys the unofficial status of being the capital of Jutland and after the city of Copenhagen, has the second largest urban area in Denmark. From the south of the city lies forestland that reaches within a kilometre of the city centre; the city has developed around the forest, hence some beautiful surrounding scenery. A large marina is located to the south of Aarhus, however, the city is mostly built around its industrial harbour.
Aarhus is located at a junction of railway lines from all over the country. With a population of roughly 300,000 residents with an addition of 1,200,000 inhabitants in the surrounding area of East Jutland, Aarhus is the second most populated region in Denmark. Aarhus is a popular tourist destination with the downtown being a mix of old red-brick buildings and brand new modern establishments. The main canal, Aboulevarden, is the lifeline of the downtown area, which runs through the centre of the city. Aarhus is located beside the sea and is encircled by forests such as Marselis, Moesgaard and Risskov along with many smaller parts of woods.
There are many lakes in and around Aarhus, which offers tourists and locals alike a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of the city life. There are many walking tracks and trails tailored around exploring the area's beautiful natural scenery. Be it beach, harbour or forest, you will find all within easy reach.
Aarhus is also home to Aarhus University, which makes this city the youngest in Denmark considering the average age of the inhabitants as there are many students studying here, despite the fact that it is one of Denmark's oldest cities historically. The harbour of Aarhus is considered as the largest in Denmark. It is also one of the largest industrial harbours in Northern Europe and is Denmark's international port. Aarhus has plenty of attractions for everyone, and being a centre of education many young people arrive in this city, creating a natural environment for many cultural activities and a fresh, lively atmosphere.
Tourists can enjoy cafes, discos, bars, cinemas, theatres, museums, amusement parks and many other entertainment sites. A number of different concerts and festivals are also organised in Aarhus, including Aarhus International Jazz Festival and Aarhus Festuge - the biggest festival in Scandinavia. The Old Town is one of the main attractions in Aarhus and comprises an assortment of striking historic Danish buildings. Another popular attraction in Aarhus is Tivoli Friheden amusement park, which offers a variety of fun attractions ideal for the whole family.
Aarhus is also a home to gastronomic delights, be it Italian, Thai, Greek, American, French or Danish cuisine - Aarhus has it all. Aarhus is also considered a top shopping destination with its string of stylish fashion boutiques and seriously chic furniture stores. Aarhus also hosts plenty of sporting events every year, including sailing, football, handball, marathons and athletics. Aarhus has the typical weather of Denmark and its climate can be defined as temperate and maritime. As Aarhus is located on the Jutland peninsula, which is a very large region, it receives many temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The summer months are a popular time to visit, with July and August being the peak times.
Summer
