Southport has a temperate maritime climate with slightly less rainfall than is normal for its location. It sits on the northwest coast of England, just above Liverpool, on the Irish Sea. It is very low-lying and so much of the town is susceptible to flooding at high tide and during stormy weather.

Summer, from June till July, is mild and windy. The average high temperature sits at 17°C in July and September and gets to a peak of 19°C in July and August. It can get into the mid 20s but you should generally carry a light extra layer with you. Night time temperatures are cool, around 13°C in warmest August. The wind makes Southport a great place for sailing and also adds an extra challenge on the golf course. Sunshine levels peak at the start of the season then gradually lessen. June sees six hours of sunshine per day while September only receives four. Rain falls quite often in light showers and that increase in September. The sea is warm enough for swimming for the average English seaside holiday hard-liner, but not for the average human. It’s probably more comfortable to stick to water sports if you want to enjoy the sea.

Autumn, in October and November, is cool and wet. The average high temperature falls to 13°C in October and 9°C in November. The average low temperature falls to 7°C and 4°C respectively and can even get down to freezing in late November. The sun becomes even feebler and rainfall increases. October is the wettest month in the year but, as in most of Britain, rain continues to fall in a sickening drizzle, preferring to rain more often than any harder.

Winter, from December till February, is quite chilly with an average high of 7°C and an average low of 2°C. It regularly falls below freezing but proximity to the sea means that frosts rarely develop. The sun plays truant, only coming out for one hour a day in December and two in January and February. It begins to dry out in January but rain still falls regularly.

Spring, between March and May, is mild and changeable. The average high temperature slowly rises to 9°C in March, 12°C in April and 15°C in May. Night time lows do not get above 10°C for the entire season. The sun quickly returns and May sees six hours of sunshine per day. Rainfall levels remain moderate though the showers are slightly more assertive, falling on only around half of the days in each month.
