Nice has a beautiful Mediterranean climate with gorgeous mild temperatures for most of the year. Because the city has hills to its north this acts as protection which contributes to the weather that Nice is so widely celebrated for. The city does receive sufficient rain year round, usually about 67 days a year will receive rainfall and these are spread sporadically throughout the four distinct seasons.

Summer

Summers in Nice are long and hot, but like many of its neighbouring Mediterranean cities the hot days are broken up by the cooling sea breeze. Summertime is the ideal time to visit Nice, promenades are filled with good food, good wine and this is merely capped of by the exquisite Mediterranean weather conditions. The evening sea breeze brings an escape from the sometimes scorching summer days which often see Nice reach temperatures of 38 – 40 degrees. Summer weather in Nice starts comparatively late, and there is a notable season lag in the region. July, rather than June, is when summer really starts to set in and the rainfall begins to decrease. Rainfall in June still averages 39mm but drops down to 16mm come July. July also sees average temperature highs increasing to 27 degrees (from 24 degrees) and average minimum is at 20 degrees.

Winter

Winters weather in Nice (November through until February) are mild, with an average temperature of about 10 degrees, with the barometer rarely dropping below 5 degrees, even at night. Throughout winter Nice receives a greater amount of hourly sunlight comparative to its Northern European comrades. For this reason Nice is a popular winter destination. Nice receives most of its rain in November and December, but even so these days are broken up by frequent crisp and sunny days. Snow falls extremely rarely in Nice, and when it does it is obviously quite the spectacle. This may happen for a few hours each year but it isn’t uncommon to go years without.

Spring and Autumn

Spring and Autumn see Nice receiving the continued mild, enjoyable weather that the Cote d’ Azur is famous for. The region receives its greatest rainfall in October and remains fairly warm right through until mid November. Spring generally averages a daily temperature of about 10 to 17 degrees and can reach highs of 20 degrees. Spring brings the European festival season and flowering countryside, so is a popular time to visit. The beaches and streets aren’t as busy as the summer crowds haven’t quite arrived. March sees an average temperature of 11 degrees moving up to an average daily temperature of 16 degrees in May. It is considerably drier in Spring than Autumn, with rainfall averaging about 65 mm per month through Spring comparative to about 125 mm per month through October and November.
