Costa Brava is an area located in Catalonia, a north east region of Spain in the province of Girona, lying 60 km north east of Barcelona. The Costa Brava has a wonderfully enjoyable and mild climate which is why it is a popular tourist destination year round for travellers, particularly those wanting a quick escape from the cooler temperatures of Britain. The Costa Brava, or 'Wild Coast', is a popular golfing destination as the mild climate, coastal location and lack of any major temperature extremes make it an ideal sporting location year round.

The region is in close proximity to the Pyrenees mountain range means that the weather in Costa Brava can be changeable. Aided by the Tramonata wind which blows from behind the mountains bringing cool winds down from the higher altitudes, the popular holiday stretch is in fact one of the coolest parts of Spain. The Tramonata wind keeps temperatures a few degrees cooler in summer and can often result in chilly winters.

Summer

The average temperature year round on the Costa Brava sits at around 22C. The peak summer months of July and August see average daily highs of 28 degrees, whilst June and September see average highs of a slightly cooler 25 degrees. During summer the average minimum sits at around 18 to 21 degrees, with June being the coolest month! The temperature is often sits at or above 30 degrees with the occasional scorching hot summers day where the sun beats down at temperatures over 35 degrees. During the height of summer the region receives up to 12 hours of sunlight per day.

July and August are peak tourist season, which sees throngs of tourists flocking to the area to soak up the sun and relax on the beaches. The area has a tendency to get quite humid, however the evening coastal winds temper the heat and humid and what results is a pleasant atmosphere ideal for sitting on the terraces drinking Sangria!

Spring/Autumm

Spring is the wettest time in Costa Brava, so while it is still am amazing time to visit as the trees and blossoming and flowers are blooming, be prepared with an umbrella as the days are often broken up by a daily shower. The area as a whole receives about 600mm of precipitation annually, so this is still fairly moderate.

Autumn has a tendency to be wet as well, though the warm summer temperatures can continue right into late October (however, this is also the regions wettest month.. consequently resulting in high humidity) Throughout Autumn daily temperatures will sit at 21 to 25 degrees, and if visiting during this time you will reap the benefits of off peak season- cheaper accommodation and less tourists.

Winter

Throughout the winter months of December to February, the sun will still shine for an average of 6 hours a day- the days are bright and crisp with temperatures dropping to

16C. Winters are short and mild, a typical characteristic of a Mediterranean climate. The average low in the area throughout winter is 6 to 8 degrees, which is definitely bearable, particularly when compared with its northern European counterparts!
