Weather Overview for Bali

Bali is an Indonesian Island located 2km south east of Java in the Indonesian archipelago. Its mix of lush tropical forest and impressive mountain landscape interspersed with sandy beaches and a hot climate, make it a popular holiday destination. Located only eight degrees south of the equator, Bali doesn’t experience much of an annual range in temperature. While seasonally the two periods (Wet and Dry season) differ greatly in characteristics, the actual temperature doesn’t vary so much- sitting at an average of 31 ºC to 33 ºC all year round.

There is slight variation in the temperatures once you head inland from the coast, as the geography of the island means that as you head inland you also head upwards- hitting the mountain ranges and rising in altitude. This means that it can get quite cool, particularly in the evenings, so it is best to pack a warm coat if visiting the mountain villages of Kintamani and Candikuning.

While climatically it is advised to visit Bali during the dry season of April to October, the Wet Season from November to March coincides with the southern hemisphere’s summer which attracts those who have time off over summer. If you are up for a party atmosphere, the time to go is during the rainy season. Students, travellers and youth flock to the island and make the most of the cheaper prices that the rainy season attracts. If you want to avoid rowdy night clubs and a vibrant party atmosphere then avoid Bali, Kuta in particular, throughout January and February. Bali is a very popular tourist destination for residents of Australia, in particular for those nearby Perth or Darwin as it is only a short, cheap, flight away.

December and January see Bali at its most humid, with relative humidity averaging 85% which makes the weather somewhat unbearable. If visiting during this time it is best to prepare by packing a lot of light, cotton clothing. Rainfall is also at its highest during this time with 280mm – 300mm falling monthly through the months December to February. Throughout the rainy season the heat remains solid, with the rain comes cooling relief but increased humidity. It’s not called the Wet Season for nothing, with the region seeing almost daily tropical downpours.

The rainy season lasts through until about April, which coincidently sees Bali experience its hottest month. Humidity in April begins to die off to about 65 – 70% and the average temperature is at a maximum of 33 ºC. April and May can be quite an enjoyable time to visit as it is just prior to the peak season of June- August so the region isn’t as busy and the weather is slightly more bearable.

June through to September is the Dry Season and temperatures remain at an average of 31- 33 ºC, humidity sits at an average 60 – 65% and rainfall is at a minimum (though so expect sporadic rainfall even during the dry season.) Just like mainly coastal regions however the towns are washed with an evening refreshing sea breeze which provides a welcome break from the heat. This time period is Bali’s ‘peak season’ so you can expect hoards of tourists and higher prices during this time, particularly during July and August.
