The town of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Ascona is located in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticinio in the country of southern Switzerland. It lies on the banks of Lake Maggiore which is a large lake to the south side of the Alps. It is the largest lake of Italy and second largest of the southern Switzerland. The town was built around the 16th century church of San Pietro e Paolo and was once a former fishing village but is now a popular tourist destination where people visit for the weather, attractions and culture.
