Weather Overview for Agios Nikolaos

The coastal town of Agios Nikolaos; located on the Greek island of Crete experiences a unique climate; warm dry summers, without much humidity and mild winters.

While Rainfall is almost non-existent in summer, showers can be expected between October and April. Average temperatures in July and August range from 30ºC throughout the day and drop to approximately 22ºC at night.

The centre of the city is a beautiful lake which is more of an ocean lake, as it is connected to the sea passing through a small canal. 

Agios Nikolaos and its 300 days of sunshine per year enjoy one of the most pleasurable climates in Europe. The temperate Mediterranean climate succeeds in this region of the Crete Island while in winter months there is substantial snowfall in the highest mountainous regions just inland.

Quite often during the months of spring a hot wind blows causing a somewhat uncomfortable dryness throughout the town. Agios Nikolaos weather is relatively mild and typically Mediterranean.

During the autumn and winter months north and northwest winds control the region, while in the summer the light breezy winds create an enjoyable temperature. Thanks to the common continuous sunshine; many people can vacation to this region at any time of the year

April sees temperatures of over 18ºC, and typically more than eight hours of sunshine on a daily bases. The months over spring are a perfect period for travelling around the city and seeing the magnificent sights of the island. Coming in just before the summer’s peak season it is also an ideal time to beat the crowds for a relaxing family holiday. Throughout May the temperature rises to 20ºC, reaching 22ºC to 24ºC by the time June arrives and peaking at 27ºC in the peak season month of August, when the beaches of Agios Nikolaos are at their busiest, and there is almost thirteen hours of sunshine every day.

The strong “meltemi” winds to the south through all of Greece grow very strong during the summer, particularly throughout August. Even though these winds create gusty winds and soothing breezes, they both serve the climate with benefits of keeping temperatures at ease.

The sun still shines between nine and eleven hours during the months of September and October, with the temperatures remaining above 20ºC. The winter months see the most precipitation, with January being the wettest month and February very close to it. While the lows of 12 ºC and a minimum of four hours of sunshine, the region is still relatively mild throughout this time of the year.
